So, this summer my plan is to hit so many new trails. I am not athletic at all, but I do enjoy getting out and going for a hike along the coast, especially here in Newfoundland because there are so many trails to explore.
Before you set foot on a hiking tail though, you'll need to be prepared. Here's a list of a few things you should have checked off on your list.
- Proper footwear: Depending on the trail you picked, you may need some serious hiking boots. I don't have any myself, so I pick trails that state easy or mild and not too rocky. Also make sure your shoes have some grip. It's dangerous on some trails to go with shoes that make you slip easy. Especially, if you're going on one right next to a cliff.
- Proper clothing: Look at the weather forecast and be prepared for rain or shine. Waterproof coats are a must and wind breaker pants. Dress for warmth because you can always take layers off you can't add layers you don't have.
- Food: Make sure you have enough food and water. Take extra as well, you never know what might happen and it's best to be prepared to handle the worst that could arise.
- Contact: This one is probably the most important. Tell someone what hike you are going on and when you expect to be back. This way if you lose your cell phone, service, or the battery dies and you get stuck a friend or family member will realize you are late and go looking for you.
- Research: research the trails. See how easy or hard they are and look at reviews. This way you can pinpoint how long it will take you to complete as well as give you an idea of warnings or interesting points to keep an eye out for on your hike.
Of course if you're going overnight trail hiking make sure to have the proper equipment, backpacks, tent, and sleeping bag and extra socks are a must. It is very important to not let your feet get too wet while hiking for very long. This could lead to athletes foot. No body wants that.
Also plan for predators in your area. If you live in a place with bears, wild cats, and who knows what else plan accordingly for what should be done with your food while you sleep or what to do if you come across one of those animals. This part I don't have a lot of experiencing in since bears are rare in my area and that is really the only "deadly" predator on the island.
So, here is my short guide to hike planning and preparing for it. Do you guys like hiking? What trails are in your area?
One of my favourites in Newfoundland is the Spout Path, mainly because this one goes to the lighthouse which is pretty cool. Or the one pictures above to the old village of La Manche.
Happy hiking and enjoy summer to the fullest!
