Thoughts and Feelings about Heading Back to School

It's been a spell and summer was a busy hot mess, but I'm back and have some thoughts for you guys.

So, if you don't follow me on Twitter you may not know that I've decided to head back to school again. However, I'm not heading back for MBA, but I am going an entirely different route. I am heading back and doing an English major and will hopefully be applying to the secondary education program at my University for next September.

This is a huge difference, I know! So far, I have been getting mixed reviews from friends and family. Some are being super supportive, others have voiced their concerns and feel like I'm wasting my business degree. However, I don't feel that way and that's the main thing. I feel like education is a much more significant role for me rather than working in a stuffy office building stuck at a desk all day. I really want to make a difference in people's lives, so why not be the teacher students can reach out to if they need help. Now, I could be completely wrong, but in this life does anything ever turn out like we want it to? Nope.

Anyway, I had my first class back the other day. It was a big day, and it is still kind of a blur. I was in buildings I haven't had classes in since my first year in 2011 and I was getting lost, but the environment is much more relaxed than in my business classes. People also seem a bit freer. I noticed so many tattoos where my business classes if you had one you had it covered. People were also wearing different styles of clothes and I was in awe taking all of that in. Luckily, I have my best friend in all of my classes so she helped me get from A to B and sorted out our textbook lists and I am ever so grateful for her.

My only real concern over this semester is how I am going to successfully juggle school and full-time work again without breaking. I have already written one of my papers and have started reading one of the required novels since this is my last day off from both school and work. I just hope I keep motivated throughout the semester.

I am going to be setting goals for myself and I hope I reach them. I will be giving updates throughout the semester and any tips I can think of for myself I will be sharing with you all!

Do you have any advice for me on how to deal with this upcoming semester? Let me know in the comments below!

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my posts!

Cosy Fall Days

One of the best things about Fall if getting cosy. Curling up on the couch or in bed, candles going, and watching a movie or reading a book are the best things. It's a relaxing time of the year since all the bugs are slowly leaving, it's no longer super hot, and coats and sweaters can resurface in everyone's closets. There is also fantastic food.

If you are looking to have your own relaxing fall day, here are a few things you may want to have:

1. A Face Mask.
One that you can wear awhile is perfect.

2. Comfy Clothes.
Sweats, pyjamas, or anything you find comfortable is perfect for this.

3. Messy Bun or Pony Tail.
Don't worry about your hair. Throw it up and get it out of your face.

4. Ultimate Cosy Place.
Whether your cosy place is your bed or the couch, pick the best place. Or even make a fort if you have the room for it.

5. Favourite Movie
Grab some of your favourite movies or add to your list on Netflix.

6. Snacks.
Whether you're trying to be healthy or this is your cheat day, grab some snacks. My go-to snack right now is still apple slices with peanut butter.

7. Get Cosy.
Now, just enjoy your day. Relax and just unwind in your cosy space.

What is your cosy space? Tweet me over here with your cozy space! I'd love to see/hear about it!

Thank you so much for stopping by and I hope you all have a wonderful day!

Halloween Themed Snack Ideas

Being a diabetic I have a love/hate relationship with Halloween. There is so much food that I should never have, but I eat it anyway. So, today I am bringing you a few Halloween snack ideas that I enjoy to chow down on or I think could be good to eat. Let's get to it!

1. Mummy- Wrapped Brie
Who doesn't love brie? I have not tried this one yet, but I would love to. It keeps coming up on my Facebook Newsfeed and it looks so good! I think this could be perfect for a Halloween themed movie party with friends or just to have with family. The recipe is over at this link.

2. Shortbread Cookies
This one I have made. Take your favourite shortbread cookie recipe and this icing recipe paired with some Halloween cookie cutters and you can have your own ghost and pumpkin cookies that taste awesome!

3. Halloween Themed Pretzels
These are super easy. Take white melted chocolate, and add a bit of orange food colouring to it. Dip your pretzels in and sprinkle with some Halloween coloured sprinkles. Super easy and very good.

4. Halloween Cake Pops
Again, this one is just making some cake pops and decorating them Halloween themed, like Frankenstein, mummies, zombies, you name it. This is yours to create!

5. Candy Apples
What's Halloween without candy apples? You can make a few or a lot. Meltdown a lot of caramel and dip your apples in it. Before the caramel dries sprinkle some candy on it and let it set in the fridge for an hour or two. So, good and lasts a while.

I hope you have enjoyed all these ideas. If you're having a Halloween Party tweet me your Halloween themed snacks! I would love to see them.

I hope you all have a wonderful day and thank you so much for stopping by!

First Month of Running Two Blogs

It has certainly been a busy month. Between work, blogs, and life it has been pretty crazy around here. Although crazy, it has certainly flown by and I feel so productive and inspired when it comes to my content creation. Writing a post or two a day has become my new schedule, and another day or two a week is for all the pictures.
In all, it's been busy. Would I change it? No way. I have also had a business idea blossom this month. More of that to follow in a number of months if it amounts to anything.

So, there are a few things I have learned over this last month:

1. Organization is key.
2. Write/Plan ahead of time.
3. Get in the spirit earlier.
4. Plan out your photography
5. Scheduling is a must.
6. Tweet scheduling is oh so important.

Most of my extra time now is going towards blogging and blogging related activities such as getting involved with chats and connecting with fellow bloggers. Thanks to it all I have been feeling very inspired and more positive. Let's hope I can keep this going. I already have a lot of posts planned for the following months and I will be participating in Blogmas here! I'm super excited for that since Christmas is my favourite time of the year.

If you're new here and are wondering about the second blog you can visit that over at www.dashofconfidence.com. I post every Sunday, Wednesday, and Friday over there.

Thank you for stopping by and I hope you all have a wonderful day!

A No Makeup Week

This past Sunday as I was using a face mask I decided to have a no makeup week. No mascara, no concealer, no powder, no foundation, just me and my own skin.

Now, this was a slightly random decision, but not entirely random. For weeks now I have had a weird breakout cluster just over from chin and kinda under my lip. It's been bad. It would never leave my face. Therefore, I was constantly grabbing my concealer ever morning trying to cover it up before work. I deal with a lot of people and I'm self conscious of my breakouts.

I had a thought then while using that face mask that maybe if I just let me skin breath for a week, still using masks, but rid myself from having constant chemicals on my face, it may improve? I have also been using more skin cleansers the past few days and enjoying a bit of a face mask here or there. Origins face masks have been my go to masks.

The good news about this experiment is that it has been working. I'm not sure if I will keep it up for another week, but the cluster is not as prominent and my face is also not as dry.

So, overall it has been an alright time even if I look like I have risen from my grave in the mornings.

Would you ever do a week without makeup? Let me know in the comments below!

Also have you gone over to see my second blog Dash of Confidence yet? It went live today! I will have a new post up every Sunday, Wednesday, and Friday over there.

I hope you all have a wonderful day & thank you for stopping by!

Resume Writing For The Awkward Soul

I haven't done a post like this in a long time and I kind of miss it. So, I thought why not especially since I'm in the process of updating my own resume/cover letters.

I don't know about you, but I hate talking or "selling" myself to potential employers. We grew up being told not to brag, but then selling yourself feels a lot like bragging so you feel so awkward the entire time. I am also just an awkward human and usually say something that throws off the interview. If you are also guilty of this let's give ourselves a little round of applause shall we? Okay, now let's get down to business.

So, with doing your resume or the layout, it's good to go with simple. You don't want anything too complex that someone has to have a map of how to read. It should be basic. I have had to deal with accepting resumes in the past and reviewing them. So, it is best to have something laid out into certain sections. Nothing to fancy and normally font of aria or times new roman. There are plenty of resume templates out there and for free as well. Just do a simple google search and plenty should come up. However, this website here has some pretty nice ones:

http://www.hloom.com/download-professional-resume-templates/

Okay, so now that you have your template set up on word it's time to start filling it in. Your name should clearly be at the top and your contact information. Now with contact information you should have your mailing address there, however, that is also up to you. Some people don't put their address especially if they are applying to places away because they believe that the employer may think they are not willing to move for the job. So, it's entirely up to you. I personally put my address there. You should also have any relevant websites here as well, for example your Linkedin web address  if you have an updated one, or a website that you run.

After that the next heading is objective. This is also a hit or miss. If you are applying for a load of mall retail jobs.. it isn't really necessary. Everyone kind of understands your objective of "get full or part time job". However, if you are applying to a firm, or anything else at a specific company it is good to have an objective statement lined up for that designated company. Here are some examples of objective statements.

Next Should be Education if you are finished or looking for a job based on what you did in secondary school. However, again if you're going for a mall job you can leave education at the end and have your high school listed there and what year you are in. Otherwise, your next section should be past work which I will get to. For Education, you should have the University or College you attended. Your high school will not be needed there. So, it will appear like so:
University- Campus location
Program of study, year attending or completed
Current G.P.A

Next section is Relevant Course Work. Which again is a you can have there or leave out. I have it there and have the last few courses I took there. Generally, where I apply to next will most likely want a copy of my transcript so I just give a little overview. I also change some of the courses depending on the job I applied for.

The next section should be Skills. The most dreaded of all headings for the awkward humans like us. I hate this section since I never know what may or may not be considered an actual proper skill. Or if the skills I think are good may seem sub-pare to an employer. However, base these skills on your past work experience for example, "Effective time management skills from past position as a shift leader at [insert job]." Meaning you learned how to manage yourself and coworkers to quickly get things done on time. Also be sure to have that you a versed in Microsoft programs. If you're not most university libraries have a free class on how to get familiar with it as well there are countless YouTube videos on that topic.

The next section is Relevant Experience. So, this is for volunteer work or certificate training programs you have done that is relevant to the job at hand or backs your past working experience.  So, for mine I have Hootsuite Certified and Superhost training. I want to be a content marketer and the training on did with Hootsuite makes me able to manage multiple social media accounts. My Superhost training backs my years of experience in tourism and hospitality.

The second last section is so important, it is your Professional Experience which of course means your past work experience. Go from most recent down to least recent, Over time when you have more job experiences you can slowly start to remove ones that are not as significant or do not really match with what you are trying to accomplish now. However, do not lie in this section. Potential employers can easily make a few phone calls and find out almost everything about you. So, be honest. So, for this sections you're going to list the organization in bold letters and have your job titles initialized underneath that. Next you should have 2-4 bullet points outlining your job duties and what you gained of importance from that position. On the side you will have the date you started there and the date you ended that job.

Finally, the last section on your resume should have references. You may need to have a full long reference letter for this part. However, generally, I put the references name, their title and job location and then a list of contact information section as home or cell phone and email.

Your resume will now be completed! Remember to be somewhat specific and also not too specific. Give a general view of what skills you learned and what duties you had in your position. It is an awkward thing to do especially if you do not enjoy talking about yourself. Try having a family member help you come up with your skills. Over time you'll be able to pick out what quality skills you have an slowly be able to take pride in the things you have done. The interview process may be more demanding in this sense, but we'll work on that next. For now, you will have a great resume.
If you would like to have this as a downloadable template just let me know and it shall be posted.

I hope you all found this helpful. What is your least favourite part about resume writing?

Thank you for stopping by!

Having a Mental Health Day

So, I had a friend growing up whose mom would let her have mental health days during the school year. I never truly began to understand those myself until recently. Now, I mean I knew what it meant to have a mental health day, that it's a way to recharge yourself when everything is getting too much and you can go shopping or sleep, but it's to give yourself an additional break. I knew that much, but I never really had any myself. I mean sometimes I would skip one of my courses for a day at school, but I would still be working away.

Now that school is finished and I'm studying for the GMAT, my weekends are full of house chores and spare time is spent blogging and occasionally with friends, and it's all kind of been building up with personal problems on top of it. I never even realized I was not acting like myself until a friend asked what was up. At the same time it's all of that and then some. Lots of stress, emotional issues, and just the big scary world getting closer and closer as fall comes around. So, it was knowing I wasn't myself and having some ideas as to why, but also none at all. I was drained, I was tired, and I was for sure not me.

So, this weekend and some of this week I wanted to have almost an entire day to me. Do something I enjoy doing or absolutely nothing. I did all of my chores and responsibilities on Friday evening and Saturday and then Sunday was going to be my day. A day to me and little else until the evening.

I wanted to sleep in, but since everyone else was up I only slept an additional hour. I literally had a slice of cake for breakfast and I made cauliflower bites and the mixture for my black bean burgers. After lunch I took a 2 hour nap and just stayed in bed. I shopped for some clothes online and it was good. I relaxed and for most of the day I felt better. Things happened later that made it more stressful, but at least I had a day to myself almost.

I think it is important to give yourself a mental health day. You shouldn't have to do everything for everyone all the time. You need to appreciate yourself and recharge and take it all in slowly.

Give yourself some time to yourself. Stop doing everything for everyone some day and  just think on yourself. Leave your room in a mess, clean your room if it helps, but try to give a day for just you. Shop, exercise, read, sleep, play video games anything that makes you feel cozy and warm and content.

If it begins to get more serious and you feel like the world is coming down on you seek help. I know that once Fall rolls around and if I still don't feel like my usual self I will be seeking help from a professional. Not everyday has to be happy, but everyday should not be sad and stressful. You deserve a wonderful life with all the ups and downs, life is not a roller coaster only heading down.

Saying Good Bye One Last Time

Saying Good Bye One Last Time

It is now July 17th, 2016. This post is not going to be an upbeat post. It may seem a little sad in fact.. so, here goes.

This past Wednesday I received the call from my mom, that I had been anticipating for weeks and wished to never come. My great grandmother passed away. The very woman I'm named after had passed away and I felt shattered.

I had come to terms to the fact that I may never see her again earlier the week. She lived over 6 hours away and has been sick for weeks. However, hearing that she had passed well.. it was still a lot to take in. My mother, father, sister, and I drove to the funeral. It was a lot of driving. However, I'm happy I was able to get off work to say my final good byes to her. She looked so peaceful and it was still a lot to take in.

Let me tell you about grandma Jessie. She lived to be 91 years old, almost 92 really because her birthday would have been in just a few weeks. She met the love of her life when she was 21 and moved to the small town of Tilt Cove where her and her husband had three daughters and five sons. Her husband passed away much too early leaving her to take care of the younger children on her own. She raised them though. She had some many grandchildren, great grand children and even one great-great grandchild who was born just a few months ago. She loved all them and always had pictures up throughout her house.

I grew up seeing her for a few months every winter and then visiting her every other summer in Tilt Cove. We even surprised her last year, if you caught that in one of my past posts from a year ago. We drove all the way and never told her and she was so shocked to see us all. It was fun.

I will miss those times. I had been hoping to visit her for her birthday this year and we surprise her again. However, that won't happen now. I will miss her getting mad at me every time I get more blond in my hair and her tickle hugs that she was so fond of giving. Her smile was lovely and her tongue was sharp.

Although I am sad that she is gone, I am so thankful that I got to know her and have her around for as long as I got to. Not many people get to say that they had their great-grandmother in their life for 23 years. But I do, which makes me so lucky. So, Jessie I hope you enjoy it up there and there's all the bingo and bowling you can play.

I will miss you and will always love you Grandma.

I don't know when I'll visit Tilt Cove again. I just know that it will never be the same there now.

Remaining Productive in Summer

Ah yes, summer. Days of heat, fun, beaches, adventure, and of course studying/work. If you've been keeping up with me for a while you'll know that I normally will take a course or two during the summer whilst also working full time and doing other side projects. It's a tall order and I normally stray away from it at times. So, how do I stay productive? Goals. Small goals specifically.

If I set the goal smaller, I'm able to complete it much faster than I anticipated originally. For example, for my blog I set aside an hour- 1.5 hours towards the blog. Those few hours can then be spent writing future posts or reading other blogs, I have to give that much time towards it.. everyday. The end of the week on Saturday I will normally treat myself then to a lazy morning and be like "Yes! I did it!"

If that satisfaction isn't enough to keep you productive, try lists. If I want to be sure to do something I make a list. Once I've completely the task on the list I cross it off. I'm not sure what it is, but seeing nothing left on my list is great.

That not enough? Routine. Make it a routine to do something daily and it will eventually stick. I read somewhere before that to make something a habit you have to do it for 60 days in a row... or well something like that. If you have to study for an upcoming test, put aside so much time a day and get that done. Even if it is the most beautiful day you should try to get it done. If you just can't bare to do it on a sunny day, bank that hour to the next. As long as you get it done at some point in the week.

Right now I've began studying for my GMAT test. It isn't until October, but I want to be sure I know the material and I'm also preparing now while I'm working a pretty chill job. I have more free time for personal matters while still getting work done and that personal matter right now is going to be GMAT studying. I'm making a study schedule and going to be following that.

Always make sure to get your work done and to take some time away to enjoy summer. Being productive in summer is difficult, but it is rewarding in the long run. What do you do to remain productive in summer?

I hope you are all having a magical day and thank you so much for stopping by!

Road Trip Planning

Now, I'm no expert on road trips since I've only ever planned one myself, but I do have some tips and tricks for you if you're planning one.

Back in 2014 my sister, a friend and I, packed up our mom's Dodge Journey drove 1,885 kms to a different province for the Cavendish Beach Music Festival. This involved driving 9 hours across our own province, a 6 hour ferry, getting lost in Nova Scotia, and again in P.E.I until we finally showed up on my aunt's doorstep. It was a great adventure. The concert was also great and is still probably one of the best birthdays I've ever had.

So, if you are thinking about hitting the road there is a few things you should keep in mind, if you are heading on a road trip with a destination.

One: Budget

You should really do this. Plan out how far you will be going and how much money you can put away for this. How much gas may you be spending on this, additional costs such as ferries, tolls, food and determine just how much this trip is going to cost all together and divide up among everyone how much each person should put forward. It's also good to know how far your car can go on a full tank of gas. Newer models usually will tell you, but if you have an older model before 2013 or 2014 it probably doesn't tell you. When we went the Journey never told us so I filled it up reset the trip and then when it was pretty much on empty I checked how long the trip was before getting gas again. This gives you a ball park figure of how far you can get by the amount of liters your car can hold. You can pretty much sum up then how often you will have to fill the car up on your trip based on the amount of kms you'll have to go.

Two: Research

If you're going a way you've never gone before look up what's along the way. See how many gas stations are on your route because that dreaded I'm running out of gas, but feel like I haven't seen a gas station in years is NOT a great time! There's a section in Newfoundland where you're not running out of gas yet, but the next gas station you won't reach until you're empty and it's too late. So, plan ahead. If you have to take a ferry look into buying the pass before hand, you will usually save money rather than when you buy it when you get there and determine how much time you should be planning before you get there.

Three: Buy Snacks

Do this. Head to the Dollarstore and just stock up on inexpensive snacks or breakfast bars. This will save you so much money compared if you always stop to a restaurant along the way. A small cooler will come in handy for this as well for any fruit or water you wish to keep cold. The Journey was great because it had under the floor cooler storage and also in the dash on the passenger side you could fit three or four soda cans or two water bottles in there to keep them cold. Anyway, for sure bring snacks and lots of them.

Four: Plan your outfits

If you're going for a few days or a week plan out those outfits. If you're planning on being in the car for most of it you really won't have to worry about getting too dirty and if you end up staying over night somewhere there's always a laundry mat somewhere. You can always wash clothes and that way you're taking up a lot of room in your trunk especially if you have a couple of people going.

Five: Insurance

If you do happen to be going for a while and want someone else to be driving for a bit. Call your insurance company. It is usually not too expensive to have someone temporarily put on your car insurance. This also saves you the hassle of having to drive all the way yourself or if you do let them drive and an accident occurs you'll at least be covered in that event. Best to be safe than sorry.

Six: Get Maps and Guides

This is a must. Even if you think you don't need it or you have a GPS why would I need a map. You never know what could happen. For example, the reason we got lost in Nova Scotia was due to our GPS crashing when we stopped to a newly open Walmart near the ferry that was being shown on the GPS as a park. It then got confused and would not work. We had to rely on signage and our phones (oh how horrible the bill was that month) to get us the rest of the way to P.E.I. Well most of the way, we managed to find a information center along the way and the lady there thankfully gave us maps of Nova Scotia and P.E.I and told us exactly how to get to the ferry. That's another thing don't be afraid to ask for help or stop into those places. They're there for a reason and that's to help people. I know, I've worked in one for 7 summers. Never be afraid to ask for help!

Seven: Organize everyone's everything

With packing make sure everything is together that way you don't have to route around the trunk trying to find a new pair of socks. Keep most of your snacks with you in the car and clothing, gear, or whatever else you're taking in the trunk. Keep this part organized too. You'll thank yourself later when you have to stop or heaven forbid get a flat and have to take the dummy tire out. Much easier if everything isn't in a mess. On to point eight...

Eight: Tires Understand Them

Bring a tire pressure gauge with you. Look up how to change a tire, print off the instructions and put that in your glove compartment. You could be out of service when it happens or have no data. So, best to have it there on the safe side. Especially if no one whose going on the road trip knows how to change a flat.

Nine: Have a family contact plan

If you're going far from home have a plan. Have a rough idea of where you will be what day so that in the event something does happen your family will know where they could reach you or if they should call the police. Not that road trips are scary, but if it is your first one it's best to be safe.

Ten: Have fun!

Not to scare you in the last one, but for sure just have fun. Enjoy the trip and the views and don't forget to stop and explore outside the car at times before you head out on your road trip! Take pictures and take it all in.

I hope you have enjoyed this post. If you guys are or aren't enjoying these things in life type of posts let me know. Would love to hear your thoughts as I develop more content. Have you guys ever gone on a road trip? Where did you go?

Thank you so much for stopping by! I hope you all have an amazing week!

Summer Morning Routine

This summer (like most summers) I have a full time job with the set hours of Monday-Friday 8am-4pm. I like this much better than when I have different days and hours every week. It helps me get a routine going. As you know if you've been following me for a while I have a terrible habit of getting into a routine and then completely losing it. So, I'm hoping over the course of the summer to continue my Monday-Friday routine at least.

First things first, getting out of bed.

This is so hard to do. I enjoy my bed and sleeping and I hate getting up. So, I have an alarm set for 6:30, 6:45, and 7:00. That way I'm kinda asleep, but waking up and slowly can rise from my slumber by 7:00. Some mornings though I've been able to get up at 6:30 on the dot and I'll then exercise for about a half hour and you know get a short shower to clean the sweat off. That happens maybe 3 mornings during the week.

I will after that make my bed. I'm trying to get into the habit of daily making my bed I feel more productive this way like "Go you! You made the bed today!". I dunno, it makes me feel better so I will make it every morning now.

Next I get dressed. The faster I'm out of my pajamas the faster I can realize I have to get going. I normally lay my clothes out the night before and have it pretty much planned with what I'm going to wear.

Third thing to do is my face. I will normally lay out all the products I use for the morning the night before. My morning face/make up routine is pretty basic for work.

I'm lazy so I use to micellar water on my face to wash it and freshen it up. Next I use a toner and moisturize my poor dry face. If I am in a no mood kinda of day that's all I will do. However, if I'm feeling up to it I then get out the makeup. Right now my go to makeup look is described more in my last post.

Then it's time for breakfast, the best meal of the day. Lately, I've been going for cereal, but sometimes if I have the time I'll get some avocado toast because who doesn't love avocados? A lot of people, but I love them and that's the main thing! However, if I have a lot of time like I did this morning I will make an omelette.

Then it's brushing my teeth, potentially putting on lipstick and I'm out the door. I'm lucky that my job right now is so close to home otherwise this process would be way different.

Anyway that's my Monday-Friday morning routine. What is your morning routine for the summer? Comment down below!

I hope you all have a wonderful day and thanks for stopping by!

Hike Planning & Preparation

So, this summer my plan is to hit so many new trails. I am not athletic at all, but I do enjoy getting out and going for a hike along the coast, especially here in Newfoundland because there are so many trails to explore.

Before you set foot on a hiking tail though, you'll need to be prepared. Here's a list of a few things you should have checked off on your list.

  • Proper footwear: Depending on the trail you picked, you may need some serious hiking boots. I don't have any myself, so I pick trails that state easy or mild and not too rocky. Also make sure your shoes have some grip. It's dangerous on some trails to go with shoes that make you slip easy. Especially, if you're going on one right next to a cliff.
  • Proper clothing: Look at the weather forecast and be prepared for rain or shine. Waterproof coats are a must and wind breaker pants. Dress for warmth because you can always take layers off you can't add layers you don't have.
  • Food: Make sure you have enough food and water. Take extra as well, you never know what might happen and it's best to be prepared to handle the worst that could arise.
  • Contact: This one is probably the most important. Tell someone what hike you are going on and when you expect to be back. This way if you lose your cell phone, service, or the battery dies and you get stuck a friend or family member will realize you are late and go looking for you.
  • Research: research the trails. See how easy or hard they are and look at reviews. This way you can pinpoint how long it will take you to complete as well as give you an idea of warnings or interesting points to keep an eye out for on your hike.
Of course if you're going overnight trail hiking make sure to have the proper equipment, backpacks, tent, and sleeping bag and extra socks are a must. It is very important to not let your feet get too wet while hiking for very long. This could lead to athletes foot. No body wants that.

Also plan for predators in your area. If you live in a place with bears, wild cats, and who knows what else plan accordingly for what should be done with your food while you sleep or what to do if you come across one of those animals. This part I don't have a lot of experiencing in since bears are rare in my area and that is really the only "deadly" predator on the island.

So, here is my short guide to hike planning and preparing for it. Do you guys like hiking? What trails are in your area?
One of my favourites in Newfoundland is the Spout Path, mainly because this one goes to the lighthouse which is pretty cool. Or the one pictures above to the old village of La Manche.

Happy hiking and enjoy summer to the fullest!

The Cram for Exams

So, if you're like my sibling you have classes on Fridays and were gifted with a snowstorm today... Yay! If you're like me and don't have classes, but have work you still have to go to... I feel for you.
For most universities in Canada right now, today is the official last day of classes and then it's finals and then it's CHRISTMAS! Now, that middle section there is what's going to damper your spirits.
Therefore, today I thought I would do a study post again since again exams are so close. So, here are some tips on studying if you have maybe been slacking off this semester or also have a lot of hours at your job during exam time!

1. Sleep
Yup, make sure you get those 8 hours of sleep. It's important, makes you feel better, and is actually good for remembering what you've studied the night before. It helps put your information into your long term memory rather than keeping it in short time. So, sleep dear child.

2. Eat
I'm just going to cover the basics obviously at first. Make sure to eat healthy foods and all your meals. Your brain can't function properly on just a pop tart you had 5 hours ago. Make sure you are eating decent meals and protein too!

3. Exercise
Exercising can also help you study better. It also gets you moving especially since during the week you would normally be walking all over campus, but now you're just in one spot for hours. When you get moving your brain gets moving so, hop on a treadmill or do some small at home work outs or if it's not too snowy where you are head for a walk.

4. Organization
Get everything ready. Gather your notes all together and past midterms and slideshows and group them all for the specified class. Unless you are a very organized human (I'm jealous, I wish I was) then you can pretty much skip this step. Making sure you're organized is important so when you are actually in study mode you're not getting up in the middle of it to look for that one loose lead you seem to be missing that has everything important on it.

5. Skim the Notes
Have a simple read through your notes. This will help jog your memory and slowly information will start coming back to you.

6. Look up
Anything you're not sure, look it up. Get out the textbook, read that section and try and get a handle of what you're not sure of.

7. Review
Review your past midterm for the course. Re-write the English question you got wrong or redo all the problems from your math midterm till you get it right. And of course, if you're still not getting it try and talk to your instructor or prof. They should be glad to help you understand it.

8. Repeat
Continuing doing all these steps and something should eventually stick!

If you're lucky enough to be free of all responsibilities today get a start on studying! Good luck to everyone! What are your studying tips? Comment down below with some!

Getting the House Ready - Part 2

If you're still in the process of getting your house cleaned and ready to go that's okay! You'll get there! Here's the next process of getting the house all ready for Christmas if you haven't yet! Planning out the decorations. You may already have this process done, I know we as a family do. Every decoration has a place to go and we have a lot of them. We also have a lot of decorations organized by room and by what they are. Like we have two bins for just the house villages, one of tree decorations, one for living room/kitchen, one for family room/bathroom. etc... it makes the put up and take down much easier and more organized. So, yes. This is the fun part of getting the house ready, actually getting to put everything up!

So, you'll first want to pick a room and beginning. We normally do family room and bathrooms first. They are the quickest. Then you move from room to room. We normally leave the Christmas village till last before the tree since that alone takes almost 2 hours. My mother has about 30 houses that go above the cupboards and then up the stairs.

Once that's done and out of the way the tree goes up. I will have a separate post on tree decorating, but in a nutshell we go ham on decorating the tree. It's a fair bit of fun. I don't know how it's all going to work out this year with all of us working/exams, I feel like we may need to break up the decorating task to separate days. It's going to be time consuming that's for sure.

Anyway, I will be coming at you next week with a tree decorating post. Organizing your Christmas decorating is probably the best way to make sure you get all of your decorations up and where you want them. Also, my apologizes for this being a short post. Exams are quickly catching up to me and the fear is real.

Hope you are all having a lovely day and I will be speaking to you guys on Wednesday!

Getting the House Ready- Part 1

Getting a house ready for Christmas can seem like a very large task. You have decorations to go up, a tree, outside lights, Christmas villages, and so much more. I will be going through with you a multiple part series of how to get your house ready.
If you're like my family and I, you are all very busy and have no time to start getting ready. You're in school, working full time or school and part time. You think how can I possible get the house ready. Well you can. It takes some family teamwork. I know sometimes hard to come by, but if everyone in your house pitches in, it'll take no time.
So, the first thing you'll want to have done is cleaned. Yup, think of it like a winter spring cleaning. Dust the furniture, throw out old magazines and flyers, clean your bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, all of it. It makes the task of decorating much easier. It's also good to get a small storage container for all the objects in your home that don't fit with your Christmas things. We have a few storage containers for this. We put the usual frames and bobbles, motorcycle things, in here. This clears away space and you can start visualizing where everything goes. We do the same thing with our dishes cupboards and pantry. It's just a very deep cleaning to the point where you may question if a family lives here. Only for maybe an hour though.
Once you have all the basics and wash down the walls.. A lot of dust can build up between then and spring cleaning. You'll want to then beginning the slow process of decorating. I will be coming at you with part 2 next Wednesday!

How has your house cleaning been going? Or are you already ready for Christmas? Let me know in the comments below!

Christmas Songs to Listen to!

I don't know about you, but I love listening to Christmas music as the season comes closer. Although, I'm not doing it today because I am still in prime test time and assignment time. It gets me too excited and I can't focus. However, after the middle of next week I will be playing Christmas music flat out. So, I thought, "why not share my favourite Christmas songs?" That's exactly what I'm going to do in today's post. Also, these are in no particular order, just some favourites from the top of my head... Let's take a look.

1. Kelly Clarkson- Underneath the Tree
So, good. Her whole Christmas album is perfect and I greatly enjoy it. This one is very upbeat and last Christmas I would play this multiple times while getting the house ready for the holidays.

2. Paul McCartney- Simply Having A Wonderful Christmas Time
I love this song, it reminds me of that newer Rudolph movie that came out maybe 10 years ago? I enjoy it and it puts me in a great mood. Although, I know a number of people that dislike it, however, me and my siblings all share the same love for this song.

3. Frank Willis- Hello Mom and Dad, I'm coming home for Christmas
This song you may not be familiar with. It was written by a Newfoundlander and when I was growing up for the Christmas concert this was sang by one of my classmates a few times. I love his version of course, however, that's not on a CD. This song has a good little beat and nice to play in the background and it just reminds me of Christmas when I was growing up.

4. Mariah Carey- All I want for Christmas is You
This is my sisters favourite, so I had to put it in somewhere. She's been playing it since last week. She also without fail will put it on when we're decorating the tree.

5. Rudolph Movie- Have a Holly Jolly Christmas
This one is perfect. Perfect to listen to leading up to Christmas. Some of my favourite songs are from those old puppet Christmas movies.

6.Year Without a Santa Claus- Mr. Snow Miser
Everyone else I know hates it, but it's one of my favourites.

7. Frosty The Snowman- any artist who sings it
Such a classic song to listen to.

8. Hey Rosetta!- Carry Me Home
A band based originally from here in Newfoundland. They actually put on a Christmas show every year here and it's tradition that me and my friend go every year. That's probably the best indication that finals are over and Christmas is here. Really good tune and if you're not familiar with Hey Rosetta take a listen they have some great songs!

9. Michael Bublé - It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas
Any of his Christmas songs are awesome!

10. Santa Looked A Lot Like Daddy- The Tractors
Again, another one I grew up with off of one of our old Newfoundland Christmas Albums.

So, here are 10 songs I enjoy listening to around Christmas time that get me way more pumped than I already am for it. What are some Christmas songs you guys enjoy listening to? Comment some songs down below!

Have a lovely day everyone!

How to Look more hire-able on Social Media and Search Engines

When we put in a resume to a potential job, most of us may not think about how our social media accounts can play a part in landing that job. There are a number of employers who will do a search on your name and look through the pictures and accounts that come up. Scary? It doesn't have to be. You have the power to somewhat control what your potential employer might see if they search your name. Here's how you can change that:

Step 1: Search yourself first. Type in your First and Last name and see what comes up. Do you see yourself? How about in images? If yes, Head on to step 2. If not, you can head to step 3 in a minute. I am one of those people who used to not show up when you searched my name. It's also especially hard if you share the same name as a celebrity or worse share the same name as a super hero's alter ego. However, don't be discouraged. These steps will help.

Step 2: Now evaluate what comes up for you. Look through all the links on the first page up to about the 10th. How many actually revolve around you? Make a list of those and determine if you think they would be bad for an employer to see or good for an employer to see.

Step 3: Figure out based on above, how often you would like to appear on the first page of Google or Bing, or any search engine. You're going to want to be there for the majority of the first page or two. Next you need to focus on how you're going to do that. If you share the same name as someone else you need to think of a way you'll come up on the search engine and then go from there. Example, since I share the same name as a fictional character, I made most of my accounts say Newfoundland or NL either in the actual web-link for certain sites like LinkedIn or into my description. That way if you search my name + Newfoundland I will actual appear.

Step 4: This is a longer step with multiple options all up to you. Here you need to go through your different social media accounts and comb through what people can see and what you want them to see. Prime example is Facebook. How secure is your Facebook account? You can choose to make all of it private, which can make it look like your hiding something. However, you can make it so people you're not yet friends with can see certain bits that actually might look good. Like, albums of you volunteering, participating in a marathon, etc... You can also have certain things you like showing and remove yourself from groups that may not look very good. You can also remove your tag from photos involving alcohol. Strong word of advice, never have alcohol or illegal substance featured in your Facebook, Instagram, or anything's cover photos or profile pictures. Potential employers don't like that. Also avoid posting statuses and tweets about those kind of things.
This is pretty much a large cleanup duty for all of your accounts. It is time consuming, so know that this is not a quick fix cleanup method.

Step 5: Do you have all the accounts you should have? If you're looking for a job and want to appear on the search engines, LinkedIn should be your go to. Normally, this will appear on the first page. You should make sure you have a proper head shot photo with just you in it and have all required fields filled in. Don't use a picture with a bunch of people in it. A clear one of just yourself is professional and plus if you've already had the interview can help your potential employer remember your face. This should be the same for your Twitter and Google +. Now, for those you can have separate professional accounts. I have a professional Twitter where I have lists, keep up with industry leaders I am interested in and have my full name in the twitter so it comes up on a search engine. The same with Google+. These are good accounts to have and preferably keep all  profile pictures and cover photos the same to keep consistence.

Step 6: Next is all up to you. It's all about what content you want to put out there and seem interested in. An employer might look at your recent photos and statuses, who you've been chatting with on Twitter and Google +. So, keep all of that in mind. Again this is not a quick fix, but if you want to be sure what your employer might think or see when they see your profiles doing this over time will be great!

If you have any questions down below on how to go about a certain specific social media channel comment down below!

How to get more Experience

In today's world and getting that dream job it's hard. The markets are fierce. Everyone seems to have some sort of secondary school or background job experience. If you're feeling hopeless.. Like I often do, there are some things you can do to gain experience. Some of these may or may not apply to you, but think about it and I'm sure it can be spun in a way to match with most people. Let's take a look now shall we?

1. Volunteer
I know, if you're not into volunteering you're probably thinking "oh no not something I don't get paid for". Unfortunately, this is one of the best ways to get recognized and looks good on a resume. Depending on what you did in school you can volunteer anywhere and it will look good because you are spending your free time helping out, networking, making friends, and learning some valuable life skills. Most communities or universities have a place where you can go in and pretty much say "I need a place to volunteer, help me". And they'll be happy to help you. This can be pretty helpful and a few hours of your day you may have just spent in bed can help you land that dream job.

2. Blogging
If you already blog, you're on the right track. Blogging is again putting your own time, energy, and thoughts into a few blog posts a week and creating a portfolio for yourself. You're pretty much saying "Im interested in this topic and I'm good at it"! It also shows that you have a lot of self motivation and passion for what you love. Especially, if your posts are somewhat geared towards what you want to do with your career. For me, I want to do social media marketing with a firm somewhere and writing my blog posts every Friday on business and media is helping me build a portfolio and talk about something I'm interested in.

3. Work term and/or apprenticeship
This one is very helpful. Getting a work term or an apprenticeship means you're already on the right track. You're gaining experience and learning valuable skills that are relevant to you and maybe even getting paid to do it. A lot of universities and businesses take part in this. Search around, even top companies like Disney have an online application form you can feel out and try to get a work term with. Just search around and you should spot something.

4. Another Piece of Paper
If you've been trying for a while to get a job and have tried the above, another piece of paper saying you know this could be that extra bit of leverage you may need. Now whether that piece of paper is a degree, Master's, certificate, or extra classes is up to you. A lot of places offer online certificate programs that add to a degree or certificates you may already have. This will give you a little bit of something extra so you can stand out a little more compared to your other former classmates who may be looking at the same job as you.

5. Keep Trying
It can be a very stressful task when you keep getting rejected by the jobs you want. Just don't give up! Or even keep trying, same place or different places. I actually have a friend who wanted a job so bad she kept calling the place every second day asking if it had been filled, she left a very determined impression and she got the job! That may not work everywhere, but there's another idea! Always remember to try and show your passion and determination.

Some other simple things that could help:
-Start a club: shows your passion and self motivation
-Start your own business or selling products on your own time: sometimes Avon helps, again this can show your time management skills and self motivation to do things unsupervised.
-Hobbies: This is actually very important sometimes on your resume. A hobby can say a lot about who you are and what you value. Sometimes potential employers will look at it and be like "cool I do that too" or think you a very well rounded person. Same with joining classes like dance or another language can show some self actualization.

Never give up on your dream job! Get experience & life skills and always remember you can do it!
Hope you found this helpful or motivating! If you have any other tips I don't have mentioned please feel free to share!

Finding Balance: The Struggle

"Take care of yourself: When you don't sleep, eat crap, don't exercise, and are living off adrenaline for too long, your performance suffers. Your decisions suffer. Your company suffers. Love those close to you: Failure of your company is not failure in life. Failure in your relationship is."-
--EV Williams, co-founder of Medium and Twitter

In any health related and sometimes business theory courses you will learn about work-life balance or finding balance in your life. It's pretty much all about how you allocate your time. Depending also on your age you may not value work-life balance as much as other people. However, starting back in the late 1970's and early 1980's the balance between work and outside work activities began being a very important topic. The generation at the time began valuing outside work activities more and realizing that what job you have isn't always what matters in life. They began spending more time at home, spending time with family and friends and enjoying life.

You may be in a point of your life right now where school and work are the only things that matter. It's okay if you are, I've been like that and am currently struggling with that now. Sometimes, there is a lot of pressures to do well in school, get that high G.P.A and to work at the same time. You can burn yourself out doing that. I know, I've been there. I have tried the university full-time and working 40 hours a week grind. It's not fun and you can really damage yourself mentally and physically.

Now you may also be thinking, "it's okay if I'm stressed all the time. It's only for right now". Sometimes yes that is true. It is only for a little while. However, sometimes when you start thinking like that, it goes on a lot longer than you were originally planning for it go on for. That's why finding a balance is key. Living life to the fullest and valuing outside work times are very important to yourself and the people around you. It gives you a chance to recharge and not worry about work. It's important to value your body and your mind.

Think of life as a triangle. One side you have work, the other side you have health and the third side you have relationships. You want this to be an equilateral triangle. Any other triangle is simply not going to do here, You need to find that perfect balance between work/school, life, and relationships. It all depends on who you are. Sometimes the triangle is going to be all over the place, but for the most part all sides should equal. Yes, a career is important. Yes, relationships are important. Yes, health is important. Allocate your time daily towards all three sides of the triangle. Things will be much better than. You'll be happier at work/school if you're happy with your relationships and health.

Unfortunately, I do not have a method of how to get to this work-life balance. I'm still trying to figure it out myself, but thinking things through and understanding what you yourself needs is how to go about this. Don't be afraid to say yes or no in any situation. Although, there are some small steps you can take to find this balance.

1. Always make sure to get your sleep and about 25-30 minutes of exercise a day. That is going to help with your health side so much more. This is keeping your body in good standing. Eating healthy for most meals will help with that too.
2. Have time for your family, friend, and pets. Always try to put an hour or two each day for those relationships you have. The report due next week can wait. Recharge yourself, laugh, and have fun for some time during the day.
3. Give some outside time into work. If you do have to work on work at home, only let it take up a bit of time. Give about an hour or less of your own time to focus just on the work that needs to be done. Set a timer and don't look at your phone. Just get the work that you can get done, done. That way the rest of your time can be used when it's needed.

At the same time, it's different for everyone. Just make sure to understand your limits and follow with how your body feels. It's not good to live with stress everyday. It can cause some serious problems for your health and well- being. Find that balance between life and work and things will become easier over time.

That's just my little blurb this week on work-life balance. If you're struggling with this or have in the past, what have you tried to help keep everything balanced? What are you struggling with right now? Let's talk about it!

Thanks for reading!

Helpful Tips For Group Projects

We have all for the most part have had to suffer through the agony of group projects. They are not fun nor enjoyable. However, it's part of so many courses in high school and in secondary school (although I personally debate whether it is truly necessary to have them in secondary). Anyway, here are some of my tips on how to handle those group projects and do well!

1. Get the Group Together
This and always should be the first priority in a group project. Get together and discuss who will do what, what goals you want to set for the project, and figure out what is expected of you. Sometimes, getting together in person can't happen, but make a Facebook chat or group for it and you can discuss from there.

2. Communicate Weekly
Normally, the project is giving at the first of the term and you have the entire semester or at least one or two months to get the project done. Once you know what you have to do for the project, make a time each week as a group to discuss what you have completed and adding it in to a google document so everyone can access it. For the most part all sections on assignments depending on the course are intertwined so, something you have chances are your team mates are going to need whatever you find out to complete their part and vise versa.

3. Keep an Open Positive Mind
I've had my share of horrible group members. I've had on occasion a few (in separate groups) who actually took it upon themselves to insult me, belittle me, and of course do nothing and put all the work on me. It truly sucks when that happens. It's good to not lose your cool at them, because although they may have started it, it's never good to fight fire with fire, believe me I know. However, what you can do in those situations is just step back from a minute. Realize this person and what they say about me or to me is not going to matter later. It's only till the end of the semester and you can continue on your way. However, if they start getting more and more insulting and not doing any work contact your teacher or instructor. They can normally fix the problem and have most likely been in the same situation when they were a student.

4. Practice
If you have to present as a group practice and practice. It looks bad when a group gets up and one person doesn't actually have a clue what they're talking about compared to the rest of the group. I had this before when one group member who did little work got up and started talking about the complete opposite objective then what he was suppose to. It was tragic. However, I've had presentations that were pretty good since we practiced and ran it through till we all knew and understood what we were talking about. So, it's good to do that.

5. Make a Gmail
Google docs will help with everything. As I said before it's great to work on a project all at the same time without the effort of trying to meet up to work on the project. There are also plenty of helpful tools in google docs that can make group projects much easier. 10/10 would recommend.

Anyway, that's just some of my helpful tools for you guys if you're struggling through a group project. Got any group project horror stories? I would love to hear about them!

Have a great week everyone and happy Monday!
